On a back street at the end of a Shirokane shopping arcade that’s well past its prime, you’ll find this superior pizzeria and Italian restaurant. Though Tarantella da Luigi opened in 2011, the interior already has a cosy, lived-in feel, with table seating and a counter running along the open kitchen (the oven itself is built into the wall by the entrance). The pizzas are consistently good, with firm crusts, light, slightly charred cornicione and well balanced toppings; try the crescent-shaped Luna Rossa (topped with ricotta, pecorino and salami) if you’re looking for something different, or the marinara if you’re looking for something cheap. Unusually for a specialist pizzeria, though, the rest of the menu is up to a similar standard, with obvious care paid to the quality of the ingredients.

We came 3 adults and a child for the pizza as my nine year old daughter had developed a craving for Marinara.
Upon arrival without reservation we were given a table and menus in Japanese. English alternative was offered by the friendly staff. We ordered our usual favourites the Marinara (600 JPY) and a standard Margharita. (1600 JPY) as well as a Quadro Formaggio which was off the menu (2600 JPY) we also had a Caprese salad and topped up with an additional Marinara.
The Marinara was excellent and the Quatro Formaggio absolutely not bad but the Margharita was topped with a relatively lousy mozzarella and the crust was a bit to chewy to my liking indicating that it would have benefitted from a bit longer baking time.
A single glass of Spumante by the glass to the wife, a glass of coke to the daughter and two bottles each of good craft beer for my self and our companion (they got some Italian ones and Baird’s beer) each bottle around 800-1200 JPY per bottle. We finished up with two deserts and one cup of coffee. All in all a simple but good meal.
The bill for the night ended just above 20,000 JPY which I think is to the higher end compared to what we got. It did not help the price that a table charge of 500 JPY was added per person and that they charged about the same for a decanter of ice water. Also the deserts and coffee was priced to the higher end of the scale…
Never the less; We will be back for more pizza because they were quite good, the staff friendly and the atmosphere great. We might come more often if they dropped the table charges.
Note: Card payment ok in the evening but they do only cash for lunch.
